Support Programme for Publishing Translations of Czech Literature Abroad

Contact person: Mgr. Denisa Rausch, denisa.rausch@mk.gov.cz

The aim of the grant selection procedure is to support entities providing public cultural services. Grants will be awarded in support of non-commercial projects in the public interest, subject to the condition of funding from multiple sources, unless precluded by the nature of the project. The support is intended for the publication abroad of translations of original Czech literature.

•    Support is available for poetry, prose, literature for children and young adults, comics, drama, essays and other genres.
•    Priority is given to contemporary literature.
•    The source language must be Czech, unless the original of the book, part of a book, extract, etc. being translated was published in another language.
•    There are no restrictions on target languages.
•    If a project is not awarded support, a new application for support may be submitted.

Thematic Areas

1) Publication of a translation of a complete book (or a themed issue of a magazine in which original Czech literature accounts for at least 50% of the total content).
•    The total amount of support may not exceed 70% of the total costs of publishing the publication.
•    As part of an application for support for the publication of a translation of a complete book, applicants may apply for:
a)    support for translation costs (up to 50% of the total publishing costs)
b)    support for copyright costs (up to 15% of the total publishing costs)
c)    support for the costs of cover design, graphic design, typesetting and printing (up to 50% of the total publishing costs)

2) Preparation of a translation extract of 10–25 standard pages of text; in the case of poetry, 10–15% of the work.
•    Applicants for support for the translation of an extract are not required to have concluded an agreement with a publisher for the publication of the extract.
•    Applicants for support for the translation of an extract agree that, if the translation is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the extract will also be used for the purposes of presenting the Czech Republic abroad.
